Trustees

The Financial Inclusion Centre is overseen by a board of trustees with substantial experience of the financial services and social entrepreneurship. They are able to offer valuable guidance and advice on how the Centre is run and importantly provide expert guidance on specific projects.

James Cornford

James is an influential figure in the social entrepreneurship world, and along with the late Michael Young and others has been instrumental in getting the concept of social entrepreneurship recognised and established in the UK.

He is Trustee of The Dartington Trust and served as Chairman between 2001 and 2007. He is Chairman of the Campaign for Freedom of Information, a Trustee of the School for Social Entrepreneurs, has served as a trustee of Elm Farm Research Centre, the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs, the Institute of Community Studies, and The Young Foundation.

James was the first director of the Institute for Public Policy Research and has been involved with many organisations in the past including the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, the Nuffield Foundation and Job Ownership Ltd (now the Employee Ownership Association).

Debbie Harrison

Debbie is a highly regarded expert in the pensions field. She is a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Pensions Institute based at CASS Business School where she lectures to financial institutions on current pensions issues.

 

Debbie is also a consultant to Government and major financial institutions and has authored many important reports on pensions. Clients include the Department for Work and Pensions on Personal Accounts, Alexander Forbes, AIG, AXA, Bank of New York, Goldman Sachs, Lane Clark & Peacock, Norwich Union, PricewaterhouseCoopers, SEI, and State Street Global Advisers.

Malcolm Hurlston

For many people working in the financial inclusion field, Malcolm needs no introduction. He is a real life social entrepreneur who has started a number of successful social businesses and not-for-profit organisations that make a difference to people’s lives. In 1993, he set up the charitable Foundation for Credit Counselling - the parent organisation of the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS). It now has 650 staff and has helped over a million people. He remains chairman.

 

He is chairman of non-profit Registry Trust, which runs the register of Judgments, Orders and Fines for the Ministry of Justice, and collects judgment information from other jurisdictions in the British Isles and Ireland. He is chairman of The Community Card, an inclusive low-cost prepaid card which is being launched with a number of credit unions. He conceived the Birmingham-based trades union bank Unity in 1980 and started the Employee Share Ownership Centre in 1988, to bring leveraged employee share ownership to Europe.

 

He is working on a number of new third sector projects. Additionally he chairs the education charity, Credit Action; CCCS Scotland; European Centre for Employee Ownership; and is a member of the advisory board of the Legal Services Complaints Commissioner.

Tony Silverman

Tony brings unrivalled experience and knowledge of the financial services industry. He is a hugely respected analyst in the industry. He is currently with Standard and Poor’s Equity Research where he is responsible for coverage of the European insurance sector. Tony has over 25 years experience in the insurance industry, equity research and sales, including 12 years as an analyst in the sector. He joined S&P from PricewaterhouseCoopers where he headed up their global insurance research activity. Before joining PwC, Tony was head of Pan European insurance research at Credit Lyonnais Securities. Prior to this, Tony worked for Deutsche Bank and NatWest Securities where his team was variously ranked number 1 or 2 in investor surveys. In addition he was ranked as one of the top 20 analysts in London across all analysts covering all sectors in a leading survey of fund managers. Tony also has worked for the Government Actuary’s Department - part of the UK Treasury. Tony Silverman graduated from Cambridge University in Mathematics and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, UK.

 

Tony has authored a number of articles and papers which have appeared in insurance industry publications, securities industry publications, and elsewhere, in addition to speaking at insurance and securities industry conferences.

The Centre’s staff

Mick McAteer is founder and Director of The Financial Inclusion Centre. He has over 20 years experience in financial services . He was formerly Principal Policy Adviser for Which? (formerly the Consumers’ Association)the largest consumer organisation in Europe. He formulated the organisation’s policy on financial services amongst other things.  He holds a number of other positions including:

-      Non-executive Director of The Financial Services Authority (FSA) and The Pensions Advisory Service (TPAS);

-       Board Member of The Financial Reporting Council’s Professional Oversight       Board (POB);

-        Registry Trust Consumer Panel Member;

-        Chair of the European Commission Financial Users Panel (FINUSE); 

-       Member of Consultative Panels of Committee of European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Supervisors (CEIOPS), Committee of European Banking Supervisors (CEBS), and Committee of European Securities Regulators (CESR);

-       Nottingham University Business School Financial Services Research Forum Steering Group.


He was one of the founding Directors of Hackney Credit Union, and is a Fellow of The School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE).

Delroy Corinaldi manages External Affairs at the Centre. Delroy is an experienced public affairs specialist and has worked for organisations in the not-for-profit and private sectors including Which? (formerly the Consumers’ Association), EnergyWatch, and FIPRA. He is also a director of Digibridge, an innovative community interest company that promotes digital and social inclusion.

Gareth Evans is Associate Research Manager at the centre. Gareth Evans is a specialist in financial exclusion research and policy formulation, with 10 years experience in the field. He specialises in undertaking detailed studies into the extent and causes of financial exclusion and has substantial hands on experience of implementing initiatives to combat financial exclusion. He was instrumental in setting up the Hackney Credit Union, and is now helping Camden Council in London set up a credit union in the borough.

Intern Programme

The Centre is keen to provide opportunities for interns who are interested in financial services with a particular emphasis on financial exclusion and behavioural economics and/ or social science.
